Local factors
What changes a Croydon double glazing quote
Six things change a Croydon quote: doorstep selling, the Chatsworth Road direction, conservation areas, listed buildings, the age of the house and flats. Check them against your address first.

|---|---|---|
| 3 No Cold Calling ZonesCroydon Council | Doorstep offers are a known local problem | Only installers you contacted |
| 2016 Chatsworth Road directionCroydon Council | Planning permission for new windows and doors | Drawings for the application in the quote |

Doorstep selling
Croydon's No Cold Calling Zones: quotes from installers you invite
Croydon has three No Cold Calling Zones, in Shirley, Norbury and the Elm Park estate. The council explains that residents there "agreed to set up local no cold calling zones as a way of reducing the number of bogus caller and rogue trader offences in their areas."
A seller at the door gives one price and asks for a signature the same day. Written quotes from installers you contacted let you compare the same windows line by line. The council publishes the zone maps and a no cold calling sign to put on your door.
Grant offers at the door deserve the same caution. Croydon's own energy advice lists insulation, solar panels and air source heat pumps, and does not mention windows or glazing.

Planning
Do you need planning permission for new windows in Croydon?
You need planning permission for new windows on Chatsworth Road and in any Croydon flat, and listed building consent on Croydon's 168 listed buildings. Other houses follow the national rules on planning permission for windows.
- Chatsworth Road: the Article 4 direction came into effect on 21 January 2016. The council's leaflet says: "Planning permission will be required for any alterations to a house such as rear or side extensions as well as general alterations such as new windows and doors."
- Flats: the same leaflet says works to the exterior of a flat or maisonette, "changes to windows/doors etc.", require planning permission.
- The Waldrons and Kenley Aerodrome: their Article 4 directions cover hard surfaces, walls, fences and gates, not windows.
- Listed buildings: Croydon says listed building consent "can include simple works for example repairs to a building if they are not exactly like-for-like."
Confirm your address before the survey. Then ask each installer whether the quote includes the drawings a planning application needs.

Conservation areas
Timber and sash window quotes in Croydon conservation areas
A historic house in one of Croydon's 21 conservation areas needs timber windows made like for like, a repair, or secondary glazing, not uPVC. The council's Conservation Area General Guidance (adopted 22 April 2013) is direct: "UPVC or aluminium window units should not be installed in historic buildings as they can significantly alter a building's original character."
The same guidance sets the order of choices:
- Repair first. "It is strongly recommended that the opinion of a joiner is sought before replacement is considered."
- Improve the existing window. "Draught proofing and the installation of secondary glazing should be considered as an alternative to replacement."
- Replace like for like. "If the replacement of windows is fully justified then they should be on a like-for-like basis where original units are of significance."
Ask installers for a timber price, and ask whether they work with a joiner who repairs original frames. Our pages on sash window replacement and wooden window replacement list the questions to put to them.

Replacement window quotes for Croydon's Victorian, 1930s and post-war homes
Croydon's housing splits three ways by age, so the right window depends on when your house was built.
| Built | Share of Croydon properties | London | Ask installers for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before 1919 | 28.2% | 28.9% | A sash or timber option beside the casement price |
| 1919 to 1939 | 23.3% | 22.0% | Each bay priced as its own line |
| 1945 to 1972 | 19.6% | 16.8% | A repair price beside a replacement price |
Croydon is a borough of houses: 60.2% of households live in one, against 45.9% across London, and 12.2% live in a detached house, the 4th highest share of London's 33 councils (Census 2021). 54.7% own their home.
Only 51.5% of Croydon homes with an EPC reach band C, and 26.1% of those built before 1929 (ONS, to March 2025). Ask for the whole-window U-value or Window Energy Rating on every quote.

Repair or replace?
Repair or replace? Misted units and failed frames in Croydon
Repair a Croydon window when the frame is sound, and replace it when the frame has failed. Repair firms rank strongly here: a glazier that replaces sealed units tops the local map results for double glazing in Croydon, and a repairs-led firm sits in the top five (8 October 2026).
- Misted glass in a sound frame: ask for a new sealed unit; the frame, hinges and locks stay.
- Draughts or a stiff opener: ask for new seals and hinge adjustment, with a replacement price to compare.
- Original timber in a conservation area: ask for a joiner's repair price first, as the council recommends.
- Rotten timber or warped uPVC: ask for a full replacement with the U-value in writing.

How to check a Croydon window company
Check a Croydon window company on a public register before it surveys, not after it quotes.
- Look the firm up on fensa.org.uk or certass.co.uk. Registration means the firm can sign off its own Building Regulations compliance.
- Search Companies House for the company named on the quote, its formation date and any past names.
- For a conservation or listed job, ask for the address of a similar Croydon job.
- Get the insurance-backed guarantee and its length in writing.
If you sign at home, you usually have at least 14 days to cancel, but made-to-measure windows can be an exception, so check the contract before you sign. The double glazing cooling off period guide explains the rules, and how to choose a double glazing installer covers the rest.

FAQ
Double glazing in Croydon: questions answered
Is there a government grant for double glazed windows?
Croydon's energy advice lists no grant for windows: it names insulation, solar panels and air source heat pumps through Croydon Healthy Homes, and Croydon Energy Loans for heating. Treat any caller offering grant-funded windows as suspect.
Which double glazing company is considered the best in the UK?
No official body ranks UK double glazing companies, and this site does not rank installers either. Compare written quotes for the same windows and check each firm on FENSA or CERTASS and Companies House.
Is my Croydon street in a No Cold Calling Zone?
Croydon runs No Cold Calling Zones in Shirley, Norbury and the Elm Park estate. The council's Trading Standards page has the zone maps and a sign for your door.
Can I fit uPVC windows in a Croydon conservation area?
Croydon's 2013 guidance says uPVC or aluminium windows "should not be installed in historic buildings". For modern buildings, the same guidance asks for new windows of "high quality design" that preserve the area's character.
Do I need permission for new windows on Chatsworth Road?
Yes. The Chatsworth Road Article 4 direction, in effect since 21 January 2016, makes new windows and doors on a house there need planning permission.
What are the disadvantages of double glazing?
Double glazing's disadvantages are sealed units that mist when their seals fail, and uPVC frames that Croydon's guidance rules out on historic buildings in its 21 conservation areas.
How much should I expect to pay for double glazing?
The amount depends on window count, frame material, bays and access. Line up itemised quotes, and see what double glazing costs in London on our sister site.
