Aluminium window installers who cover your postcode
Aluminium window installers who cover your postcode survey your windows and quote in writing when you send one short form. Pick Aluminium in the form, so every quote prices the same frame.
- Pick Aluminium in the form. Say which windows open and the colour you want when they ring to confirm
- Check before the survey: six schemes can sign off replacement windows
- Free and no obligation. Say no to every quote if none suit you

Before the survey
How to check an aluminium window installer
Check that the installer is registered with a competent person scheme for replacement windows, on the scheme's own search, before the survey. GOV.UK lists six: FENSA, CERTASS, Blue Flame Certification, Certsure, NAPIT and ASSURE.
- Search the FENSA installer search by postcode, name or registration number. FENSA says an installer missing from it is likely not active.
- CERTASS installers are listed on the Certified Competent search.
- Without a scheme, the job needs building control approval before the windows go in.
- FENSA cannot register widened openings, extensions or Grade I listed homes, so ask how those are signed off.
The full walkthrough, from the survey to Companies House, is on our page on double glazing installers.
Three kinds of aluminium window company
System companies design the aluminium profiles. Fabricators make windows from them for the trade. Installers survey your home, fit the windows and register the job.
You hire the installer. Ask them to name the system on the quote, and check their scheme registration, not the brand's.
The spec
What an aluminium window quote should include
An aluminium window quote names the whole-window energy figure, the frame system and finish, and how each window opens, after a survey of every opening. Ask every installer to price the same items:
| On the quote | Ask |
|---|---|
| Energy figure | Is each window 1.4 W/m²K or better, or band B or better, for the whole window, frame and glass together? That is the limit for replacement windows in England. |
| Frame system | Is the frame thermally broken, with insulating material between the inner and outer aluminium, and which system is it? |
| Colour and finish | Powder coat or anodised, and is the colour the same inside and out? |
| Style | Casement, flush casement, tilt and turn, sliding sash, heritage or fixed, and which panes open? |
| Glass | Double or triple, and safety glass in low panes and in or beside doors? |
| Trickle vents | Which windows get them? Most replacement windows have needed background ventilation since 15 June 2022. |
| Escape | Which opening on each upper floor is the escape window, and is it at least as large as the old one? |
| Sign-off | Which scheme and registration number, and which certificate do you get after fitting? |
To line the quotes up, use our guide on how to compare double glazing quotes. If you sign at home, you usually have at least 14 days to cancel, but made-to-measure windows can be an exception, so check the contract before you sign: see the double glazing cooling off period.

Fitted or not
Supply only or supply and fit?
A supply and fit quote covers the survey, the fitting and the building regulations certificate. Supply only leaves the measuring and the sign-off with you.
Supply-only sellers' terms can leave you paying for a window that doesn't fit if a measurement is wrong. And if the person who fits it is not registered with a scheme, the job needs building control approval before the window goes in. The installers we pass enquiries to quote for supply and fit, and they measure every opening themselves.
Permission first
Do you need permission to change to aluminium windows?
A house in England can usually replace its windows without planning permission if the new ones look similar to the old. Switching to aluminium is a change of material, so whether it counts as similar is the council's call.
| Your home | What applies |
|---|---|
| House | Usually no planning permission for windows of a similar appearance. Ask the council if the street is sensitive. |
| Flat | Flats have no householder permitted development rights, so a visible change of frame material can need permission. Check the lease too: see replacing windows in a leasehold flat. |
| Conservation area or Article 4 direction | Check with the council first. Some name aluminium as unsuitable: see double glazing in London for Bedford Park and double glazing in Basingstoke. |
| Listed building | Historic England says replacing windows always needs listed building consent. Speak to the conservation officer before you ask for quotes. |
Where the council expects timber, see our page on replacing wooden windows. Do you need planning permission to replace windows? Our checker gives a quick answer for your home.
Scotland and Wales run their own systems: see double glazing quotes in Glasgow and double glazing in Cardiff.
FAQ
Aluminium window installers: common questions
What are the downsides of using aluminium windows?
The frame affects heat loss, so a poor frame can take a window over the limit: insist on the whole-window figure. Changing to aluminium can need permission in a flat, a conservation area, an Article 4 street or a listed building. And supply-only windows leave the measuring and sign-off with you.
How much do window fitters charge to fit a window?
Each installer prices your windows after a survey, so compare written quotes; for typical figures, see what aluminium windows cost on our sister site.
Which company is best for aluminium windows?
No single company is best for every home. Compare written quotes for the same specification from installers registered with a scheme on the GOV.UK list, and check each registration yourself.
How is an aluminium window installed?
The installer surveys and measures every opening, removes the old frame, fixes and seals the new one, fits the sill and makes good. A registered installer then registers the job and you receive the certificate.
