What you can get quoted for
What you can get quoted for in Bromley
Bromley installers quote for whole-house window replacement, glass-only units, secondary glazing and repairs through one form:
- Replacement windows in uPVC, aluminium or timber for the borough's inter-war and post-war houses;
- Heritage timber or sash windows for Shortlands, Chislehurst and other conservation streets, compared under sash window replacement;
- Sealed-unit replacement where the frames are sound but panes have misted;
- Secondary glazing for listed homes, where the original window stays;
- Repairs to hinges, handles, locks and seals, a job Bromley searches ask for by name.
Ask the installer whether a door can go on the same quote.

Local factors
What changes a Bromley double glazing quote
Five things change a Bromley quote: doorstep selling, EPC ratings, the age of the frames, conservation areas and the Chancery Lane direction. Check which apply before you book surveys.
| In Bromley | What it changes in your quote | Ask or check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 July 2026 cold-caller alertBromley Trading Standards | Doorstep and grant-funded window offers are a red flag | Installers you contacted, not callers at the door |
| 44.2% of homes reach EPC band CONS | Most homes sit below band C, so window ratings matter | The whole-window U-value or WER on each quote |
| 26.6% of properties built 1945 to 1972VOA 2025 | Many post-war frames to repair or replace | A repair price and a replacement price |
| 47 conservation areasBromley Council | Windows that respect the original design | A timber or heritage-profile option |
| 1984 Article 4 direction, Chancery LaneBromley Council | Planning permission to insert or resize a window | Whether your Beckenham address is covered |
Doorstep sales
Bromley window quotes without cold callers or "free grant" offers
Bromley Trading Standards tells residents not to deal with doorstep traders at all. Its alert of 1 July 2026 says: "The Trading Standards advice is clear: don't deal with doorstep traders and seek out bona fide traders instead."
The council adds three points:
- The council never cold calls. A January 2023 alert states: "Bromley Council will never cold call offering to carry out work."
- Grant callers are a known scam. Bromley's home energy grants page warns: "Please beware of potential scams relating to the application and installation process for the Warm Homes Local Grant!"
- Windows are not on the grant list. The same page lists insulation and heating measures under Warm Homes: Local Grant. Windows are not among them.
A caller offering "free double glazing under a government grant" in Bromley is therefore a red flag. Check any grant claim on the council's own page, and ask Trading Standards for the free cold-caller sticker for your door. London Trading Standards gives the same advice across the capital: it "strongly advises residents never to deal with cold callers on your doorstep".
A doorstep sale gives one price and pressure to sign on the day. Three written quotes from installers you contacted give you a comparison and time to read the contract.

Bromley homes
Window quotes for Bromley homes below EPC band C
Only 44.2% of Bromley homes with an EPC reach band C or above, one of the lowest shares in London. Most of the rest are owner-occupied houses built between 1919 and 1972.
| Measure | Bromley | London |
|---|---|---|
| EPC band C or above, all homes | 44.2% | 57.9% |
| EPC band C or above, homes built before 1929 | 22.9% | n/a |
| Properties built 1919 to 1939 | 29.8% | 22.2% |
| Properties built 1945 to 1972 | 26.6% | 16.9% |
| Households in a house | 68.6% | 45.9% |
An owner of a D-rated house chooses the glass specification, not a landlord or freeholder. Ask every installer for the whole-window U-value or Window Energy Rating of each window, written on the quote. A figure for the glass alone flatters the result.

Planning
Do you need planning permission for new windows in Bromley?
Most Bromley houses need no planning permission for similar-looking replacement windows. The exceptions are Chancery Lane in Beckenham, listed buildings, flats and new bays, and Bromley's 47 conservation areas expect windows that respect the original design.
- Chancery Lane, Beckenham: the 1984 Article 4 direction controls "the insertion of a door or window, or the alteration of the size or shape of an existing door or window aperture".
- Shortlands Village: the June 2025 appraisal says uPVC components "can rarely reflect the carefully considered proportions" of original windows, "and their use is discouraged". It asks for repair of original joinery "where practical".
- Listed buildings: the council states that "nearly all alterations to statutory listed buildings, including internal works, require listed building consent".
- Areas of Special Residential Character: Bromley's Article 4 directions here, including Petts Wood, target upward extensions and roofs, not windows.
In a conservation area, ask installers for a timber or heritage-profile option alongside standard uPVC, and ask whether they have worked on a Bromley conservation street before.

Repair or replace?
Repair or replace: Bromley's 1930s and post-war windows
Repair Bromley windows when the frame is sound and replace them when it is not. "Double glazing repairs Bromley", "Orpington" and "Beckenham" are all common Google suggestions, and the local map results lean towards repair firms.
- Misted panes in sound frames: ask for sealed-unit replacement first. The frame, hinges and locks stay.
- Draughts on a 1960s or 1970s window: ask for new seals and hinge adjustment, then a replacement price for comparison.
- Rotten timber or warped frames: ask for a full replacement, with the U-value written down.
- Original windows in Shortlands: ask for a repair price, because the appraisal favours repair of original joinery.
Bromley has more post-war homes than London as a whole: 26.6% were built between 1945 and 1972. Ask each installer how old your current frames are, and whether a repair buys enough years to be worth it. Our page on repairing or replacing windows in London covers glass-only and full-frame options.

How to check a Bromley window company
Check a Bromley window company on its scheme register and on Companies House, and get its guarantee in writing, before any survey. Bromley Trading Standards asks residents to "seek out bona fide traders", and these checks are how you do it.
- Search the company on fensa.org.uk or certass.co.uk yourself. A registered installer self-certifies the work under Building Regulations and gives you a certificate.
- Look the company up on Companies House to see that it is active, when it was formed and any previous names.
- Ask for an insurance-backed guarantee in writing, with its length, so it still applies if the company stops trading.
- Compare three itemised written quotes for the same windows, using our guide on how to compare double glazing quotes.
If you sign at home, you usually have at least 14 days to cancel, but made-to-measure windows can be an exception, so check the contract before you sign. Our double glazing cooling off period guide explains the rules. For the wider checklist, see how to choose a double glazing installer.

FAQ
Double glazing in Bromley, answered
Is there a grant for double glazing in Bromley?
Bromley Council's home energy grants page lists no window measures under Warm Homes: Local Grant, and it warns residents about scams linked to the grant. Treat any doorstep offer of grant-funded windows as suspect.
Do I need planning permission for new windows in Bromley?
A Bromley house rarely needs planning permission for similar-looking windows. Chancery Lane in Beckenham, listed buildings, flats and new bays are the exceptions.
Is Bromley in London or Kent?
Bromley is a London borough and has been part of Greater London since 1965, although many postal addresses still say Kent. Bromley Council, not Kent County Council, handles planning and Trading Standards.
What is the best time of year to buy double glazing?
The best time is when you can compare quotes without a deadline, and no month is proven cheapest. Our guide to the best time of year to buy double glazing covers lead times and fitting weather.
Is it worth replacing 20 year old double glazing?
Replacing 20 year old double glazing pays off only when the frames, hinges or seals have failed beyond adjustment. A Bromley window with misted glass in a sound frame needs a new sealed unit, not a new window.
What are the disadvantages of double glazing?
Double glazing's drawbacks are sealed units that mist once their seals fail, uPVC frames that Bromley discourages on period houses in conservation areas, and a higher outlay than repairing frames that are still sound.
How much should I expect to pay for double glazing?
The amount depends on window count, frame material, bays and access, so line up itemised quotes and see what double glazing costs in London on our sister site.
